Born on 5th November 1959 in Nuwakot
Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat was born in 1959 in Kabilas, a remote village of Nuwakot, in the prosperous family of Mrs. Tol Kumari and Mr. Khadka Bahadur Mahat. Up to the age of thirteen years, he stayed in his village and got his secondary schooling there itself. After completing his schooling, he moved to Kathmandu in pursue of higher education.
Involvement in Politics
In 1970, at the age of 11 years, being inspired by the ideologies of the Nepali Congress and BP Koirala he became member of Nepal Student's Union (NSU), the student wing of Nepali Congress. He involved in student politics andn actively participated in several organizational activities after then. He was imprisoned several times during 70s and 80s.
General Secretary, Nepal Student's Union
He began his political career by being actively involved in the student politics from 1970s. From 1983 to 1987, he served as general secretary of Nepal Students’ Union.
Ph.D. in Economics
Dr. Mahat received his PhD from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois, US in 1985. Dr. Mahat was also a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship (USA) 1988.
The People’s Movement
In 1990 the Nepali Congress lead a campaign to achieve a multiparty democracy in Nepal. Mahat was a Member of Action Committee on behalf of Nepali Congress during the People's Movement of 1990.
Member Secretary, High Level Committee Constituted by Nepal Government
He was Member Secretary of High Level Committee constituted by Nepal Government in 1999 for the Resolution of Maoist insurgency.
After formation of new Party Nepali Congress (Democratic) under chairmanship of Sher Bahadur Deuba, Dr. Mahat was appointed as Central Committee Member.
Member, National Planning Commission
He was a member of National Planning Commission from April 2002 to October 2002.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs
He was State Former Minister for Foreign Affairs from June 2004 to February 2005.
Member, National Peace Committee
Dr. Mahat served as Member of National Peace Committee, which was constituted for facilitating dialogue and helping government to work on peace deal and preparation of peace accord.
Member, Government Dialogue Team
He was also entrusted with the responsibility to negotiate with different agitating groups in Nepal as one of the members of Government Dialogue Team from August 2007 to June 2008.
Elected as Constituent Assembly Member
Mahat has served in the legislature and executive branches of Nepal in different periods in various capacities. He was a Member of Interim Legislative-Parliament from 2006 to 2008. He was a member of the 1st Constituent Assembly from May 2008 to May 201
Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, an NC Central Committee member, joined the cabinet on June 4 and was appointed Minister of Energy on June 17. Mahat was nominated to the Constituent Assembly under the proportional representation system in April 2008.
Elected as Constituent Assembly Member
Second Constituent Assembly elections were held in Nepal on 19 November 2013. Among 91 seats allotted by proportional representation for Nepali Congress, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat was one of the elected member.

On March 7, 2016, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat was elected as Nepali Congress Central Committee Member. He received 1,491 delegates votes.
On May 4, 2018, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat was appointed as Nepali Congress Co-General Secratary by Party Chairman Shri Sher Bahadur Deuba.
The Nepali Congress has formed a COVID-19 Monitoring Committee to prevent and control the spread of Coronavirus. The party’s joint general secretary Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has been appointed as coordinator and will lead 35 members under this committee.
